A beginner’s guide to understanding odds at crypto sportsbooks and casinos.
Odds Represent Probability
Odds tell you two things:
- How likely an event is to happen
- How much you’ll win if it does
Odds Formats
Decimal Odds (Most Common in Crypto)
Used by most crypto sportsbooks. The number represents your total return per unit bet.
| Odds | Meaning | $10 Bet Pays |
|---|---|---|
| 1.50 | You get $15 back ($5 profit) | $15 |
| 2.00 | You double your money | $20 |
| 3.50 | You get 3.5x your bet | $35 |
| 10.00 | You get 10x your bet | $100 |
Formula: Profit = (Stake × Odds) - Stake
Fractional Odds (Traditional UK Format)
Shows your profit relative to your stake.
| Odds | Meaning | $10 Bet Profit |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2 | Win $1 for every $2 bet | $5 |
| 1/1 (Evens) | Win $1 for every $1 bet | $10 |
| 5/2 | Win $5 for every $2 bet | $25 |
American Odds (US Format)
Uses + and - signs. Positive = underdog, Negative = favorite.
| Odds | Meaning |
|---|---|
| +200 | Bet $100 to win $200 profit |
| -150 | Bet $150 to win $100 profit |
House Edge
Every casino game has a built-in mathematical advantage for the house. This is called the house edge:
| Game | Typical House Edge |
|---|---|
| Blackjack | 0.5-2% |
| Roulette (European) | 2.7% |
| Baccarat | 1.06-1.24% |
| Slots | 2-10% |
| Crash Games | 1-4% |
| Dice Games | 1-2% |
RTP (Return to Player)
RTP is the inverse of house edge. A game with 97% RTP gives back $97 for every $100 wagered, on average, over millions of bets.
- RTP above 96% is considered good
- RTP below 94% is below average
Remember: Odds represent long-term mathematical expectations. In the short term, anything can happen — that’s what makes gambling exciting (and risky).
